*BREEDERS CUP PREVIEW*
*FIRST 2 DAY EVENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE BREEDERS CUP*
This year marks a new format for the Breeders Cup Thoroughbred Championships. We will have divisional races contested on Friday and Saturday.
While it may look as though we will have an additional day of Breeders Cup races, Friday looks more like a wetting of the appetite for the main events on Saturday.
Friday will feature the NEW 1 Mile Dirt Championships, Filly and Mare Sprint Championship and, The Juvenile Turf Championship.
The logic behind a Juvenile Turf Championship escapes this writer. If it is set to cater to the Euro 2 year olds, then we may never know if they are better then our own. How many 2 year olds have a proven record racing on turf that they would need a special distinction of being a turf specialst. Are'nt great Turf stars usually 8 to 10 year old reformed claimers who found new life switching to the sod ? In addition, a Filly and Mare Sprint will only insure that we never see brilliant sprinting distaff stars go against the boys again.

*BCup Juv Fillies* 1 1/16 Mile Sloppy Track $2,000,000
Indian Blessing flies through the slop on way to a smashing victory.
Bob Baffert finally has some top contenders again. This filly was very impressive as she came through the stretch and pulled away from this field. Although the slop had to help her, this one looks like she may be something special next year.
2nd and 3rd : Proud Spell, surprised at long odds for 2nd. Backseat Rhythm, another who beneifted from the off track for a suck up 3rd.
Final Time : 1:44 3/5 a strong time in the mud.

*BCup Juvenile* 1 1/16 Mile Sloppy Track $2,000,000
War Pass got the job done for Nick Zito in an impressive stretch drive that makes us think Zito may have a contender for next year if all stays right with this one.
2nd and 3rd : Pyro was 2nd...and Kodiack Koqboy was 3rd.
Final Time : 1:42 3/5 was 2 full seconds fater then the girls/

*BCup Filly and Mare Turf* 1 3/8 Mile(TURF) $2,000,000
I thought when they added this divisiion, it was more then enough extra races for the Breeders Cup, but you can probably expect 2 or more races added next year including the 2F championships and the 3 Mile Endurance.
Lahoudood made a beautiful middle move run to win this race in smashing form. This race was an impressive performance. Alan Garcia was ultra impressive in taking this race with a lot of upper body strength shown. Good job.
2nd and 3rd : Honey Ryder was a surprise 2nd, as she has always failed to live up to her potential. Passage of Time 3rd.
Final Time : 2:22 3/5 a slow race on soft turf.
__________________________________________________________
*BCup Sprint* 6 Furlongs $2,000,000
Midnight Lute translates his California speed into an incredible and solid close through the stretch. This finish was ultra impressive as Lute was very far back on the turn, shifted out wide and came flying down the stretch for a widening length victory. This race points out Lute as Sprinter of the Year. Baffert gets another victory for a great day.
2nd and 3rd : Idiot Proof uses his speed to advantage to be 2nd in slop. Talent Search comes in 3rd.
Final Time : 1:09 flat. A great time for such a sloppy track.
__________________________________________________________
*BCup Mile* 1 Mile TURF $2,000,000
Kip Deville supplements and wins in a big way. The connections were not surprised as they felt this one was going to run a big race. Trainer Dutrow also needs congratulations for a big win. Good Job.
2nd and 3rd : Euro favorite, Excellent Art runs a respectable 2nd on a tight course with a lot of trafic to overcome. Cosmonaut was 3rd.
Final Time : 1:39 4/5 very slow, but the turf was very soft.
__________________________________________________________
*BCup Distaff* Filly and Mares 1 1/8 Mile $2,000,000
Ginger Punch runs well for Bobby Frankel and Rafeal Bejarano. This one looked ready to run a big race, and what better time to peak then in the Breeders Cup.
2nd and 3rd : Hystericallady was 2nd and Octave was 3rd.
Final Time : 1:50 1/5 more a sign of the off track then the performance.
__________________________________________________________
*BCup Turf* 1 1/2 Mile TURF $2,700,000
English Channel fires big and Dylan Thomas does not. The big showdown never took place as English Channel ran his race and fired big through the stretch. European Favoroite, Dylan Thomas, who has won every big race in Europe had to settle for 5th a bad run over the very soft turf.
2nd and 3rd : Shamdinan was 2nd and Red Rocks was 3rd.
Final Time : 2:36 4/5 a typical time for a marathon on turf with a soft surface.
__________________________________________________________
*BCup Classic* 1 1/4 Mile $4,500,000
This race was actually one of the best match ups on paper and full of possabilities.
While appearing to be more of a rematch of the Triple Crown runners, Curlin, Street Sense and Hard Spun, we also had 4 year old, Lawyer Ron. In a sad side note, George Washington, the European horse brought out of retirement to run here, fell in the stretch and had to be destroyed right in front of the finish line.
Curlin and Street Sense moved as a team going down the backstretch, but it was Curlin who prevailed and won pulling away.
2nd and 3rd : Hard Spun holds on for 2nd after leading most of the way. Longshot Awesome Gem gets 3rd. Note, the morning line on Awesome Gem was rather hard to figure as he had been 2nd or 3rd in most of his last 10 races. In fact after being a nose behind Tiago, that one was 12-1 morning line, and he was 30-1 morning line ?
Final Time : 2:00 3/5 a decent time in the off going.

*Final Thoughts on the 2007 Breeders Cup*
This years Breeders Cup had to overcome so many hardships even the best of intentions could not salvage it.
The weather was terrible, and it hurt the races performance and the ability to bring out an enourmous crowd, like a Superbowl or World Series would.
The ESPN coverage was perhaps the very worst in the history of the Breeders Cup with absolutely nothing other then a showing of the races done to try and promote this great sport. Indeed, it was no surprise to read the many emails we received that fans tuned into TVG's broadcast to hear that commentary and they then went back to the live broadcast only to watch the races.
We can only hope that next years format will be radically changed and different announcers will be brought in to help showcase our sport. Another broadcast like that one and Horse Racing may never recover. I still cannot get over the fact that not one replay was shown of ANY prep race leading into this years Championships. Its like ESPN did not even care to do the work required to give the fans the basics. The commentators simply adlibed through the entire broadcast and did not give any insights or fresh information into the race. We did not hear from any of the trainers or jockeys prior to the race about their chances. This years broadcast was simply awful, lets hope it never happens this way again.

*DIRT MILE CHAMPIONSHIP*
PP# -- HORSE -- JOCKEY -- TRAINER - MORNING LINE ODDS
1 -- Discreet Cat -- G.Gomez -- S.Suroor -- 2/1
2 -- Lewis Michael -- J.Talamo -- W.Catalano -- 6/1
3 -- Wanderin Boy -- J.Castellano -- N.Zito -- 8/1
4 -- Forefathers -- Channing Hill -- W.Mott -- 20/1
5 -- High Finance -- J.Velazquez -- 5/1
6 -- Gottcha Gold -- C.Lopez -- E.Plesa -- 8/1
7 -- Park Avenue Ball -- J.Bravo -- J.Ryerson -- 15/1
8 -- Corinthian -- K.Desormeaux -- J.Jerkens -- 7/2
9 -- Xchanger -- R.Dominguez -- M.Shuman -- 6/1
PRE RACE COMMENTS : Can Gotcha Gold move this high up in class and kep his winning ways going on the local surface ? Unless Discreet Cat's connections put him in a time machine and turned the clock back a year ago, how do we know what kind of shape this one is in ? Park Avenue Ball holds 6 wins from 10 stats at Monmouth, with 3 of 5 wins at this distance.
RACE STRENGTH : This is a very wide open race. There are many different class angles to consider. The distance is NOT a true Mile. It is a 1 Mile 70 Yard race, which is just a little longer then 1 Mile. Race Quality is high, but the field is irratic in consistant performance.
*RACE FINISH : CORINTHIAN Won drawing off through the stretch. Gottcha Gold 2nd with terrific speed at long odds. Discreet Cat 3rd in a enourmous suck out performance that did not deserve to be in the money.

*FILLY AND MARE SPRINT DIVISION*
PP# -- HORSE -- JOCKEY -- TRAINER - MORNING LINE ODDS
1 -- Miss Macy Sue -- E.Razo -- K.Von Hemel -- 6/1
2 -- Miraculous Miss -- J.Rose -- S.Klesaris -- 15/1
3 -- Dream Rush -- E.Coa -- R.Violette -- 2/1
4 -- Maryfield -- E.Trujillo -- D.O'Neill -- 15/1
5 -- Jazzy -- D.Flores -- M.Hennig -- 20/1
6 -- Oprah Winney -- G.Gomez -- R.Dutrow -- 6/1
7 -- La Traviata -- J.Leparoux -- F.Parisel -- 5/2
8 -- Wild Gams -- R.Dominguez -- B.Perkins -- 10/1
9 -- Shaggy Mane -- C.Velasquez -- D.Chatlos -- 12/1
10 -- Baroness Thatcher -- K.Desormeaux -- F.Parisel -- 12/1
PRE RACE COMMENTS : Dream Rush has never been worse then 2nd in lifetime record. Do you like NY Breds like Funny Cide when they race in open company ? Well, how about Oprah Winney ? She has Gomez, but does she have the last furlong push to get the job done ? Baroness Thatcher is also a very live and coiled up filly. Can Baroness Thatcher strike with a power move in the stretch to win ?
RACE STRENGTH : This is a wide open race. There are no standouts, and the obvious favorite, Dream Rush will be overbet. Any girl entered in this race can win it. We have the top 5 in our selections and feel confident we have a high paying trifecta combination. This race means the end of the girls facing the boys in the B.Cup Sprint.
*RACE FINISH : MARYFIELD Won with a fantastic closing finish that rivaled the very best of her division. Miraculous Miss 2nd in a stunner long shot exacta. Miss Macy Sue 3rd after a rought trip.

*JUVENILE TURF CHAMPIONSHIP*
PP# -- HORSE -- JOCKEY -- TRAINER - MORNING LINE ODDS
1 -- Your Round -- E.Castro -- M.Hubley -- 30/1
2 -- Cannonball -- E.Trujillo -- W.Ward -- 50/1
3 -- The Leopard -- J.Velazquez -- T.Pletcher -- 8/1
4 -- Cherokee Triangle -- R.Albarado -- M.Maker -- 10/1
5 -- Strike the Deal -- L.Dettori -- J.Noseda -- 9/2
6 -- Gio Ponti -- R.Dominguez -- C.Clement -- 8/1
7 -- Nownownow -- J.Leparoux -- F.Parisel -- 10/1
8 -- Achill Island -- J.Murtagh -- .O'Brien -- 7/2
9 -- Prussian -- K.Desormeaux -- W.Mott -- 3/1
10 -- Preachin Man -- J.Velasquez -- R.Werner -- 50/1
11 -- Texas Fever -- G.Gomez -- M.Stidham -- 30/1
12 -- Domestic Fund -- P.Smullen -- D.Weld -- 5/1
PRE RACE COMMENTS : The Weather at Monmouth today is VERY Dark and raining. The overwhelming outlook is for an extremely soft turf. The logic behind this race completely escapes me. It breaks the 2 year olds into different groups, and makes it much more difficult to figure out who is the best 2 year old. In addition, only 3 european 2 year olds even thought enough of this race to run in it. They still view the Juvenile as the MAIN 2 year old race. *Note-Almost the entire field finished 1st or 2nd in their last race.
RACE STRENGTH : The field has a group of horses who have never run more then 5 races, with the exception of one runner with 7 starts. The off turf makes it even more difficult to figure out who will be the top level horse. This race is so wide open, you should be ashamed to tell anyone who you like.
