5/06/07 - DERBY WRAP UP

In what many were calling a wide open race, the Kentucky Derby turned into a coronation for a champion. While there were many speed horses in this race, the one with the most pace turned out to be Hard Spun. After flying through decent fractions around the track, Hard Spun looked set to sail home for a huge win. As they came through the stretch and everyone was yelling for the closers, only one lone figure appeared. It was the powerful sillihouette of muscles known as Street Sense.

For the first time ever since 1984, a Breeders Cup Juvinile winner has won the Kentucky Derby as a three year old. Jockey Calvin Borel, and Trainer Carl Nafzager were beaming yeterday when they drew the advantageous post #7. It worked out very much to their advanatage. With good early position, and the ability to relax, as the field turned for home, they made their move. Imagine a griffin type mythical figure with jockeys arms and the body of a horse, and you have Street Sense's victory in the Derby. It was very much an open race turning for home. One clearly got the sense that Hard Spun had set sail and was going to open up and winby a big margin.

What makes the performance all the more remarkable, is that Street Sense was 19th going down the backstretch. Calvin Borel found holes and went up the rail in this huge field. He was absolutely fearless to do this, as at any moment that hole could have closed. Also, when running full bore on the rail, if you get bumped from the outside, your going to go right over. It was an incredible performance and we look for Calvin Borel and Street Sense to make an honest run for the Triple Crown this year.

As Hard Spun and Street Sense ran through the stretch at Churchill Downs, it evoked memories of Affirmed and Alydar. We do have advanced word that both horses are going to run in the Preakness Stakes. There is no reason to think they won't again finish 1-2.

Early favorite, Curlin, ran a fantastic race. After being sandwiched on the rail from this huge field going into the first turn, Curlin kept his composure and was able to rally for 3rd position in this very large and talented field. Expect to see Curlin improve off of this effort.

Monster long shot, Im a wild and crazy guy, snatched a surprise 4th place finish that capped a massive $22,000+ Superfecta. Unless you were a big Steve Martin fan and knew that he created that character on SNL so many years ago, you were out of luck.

We're looking forward to the Preakness Stakes and we think there is a very strong possiblity of a Triple Crown Winner this year in Street Sense.

ALL HORSES RACE ON LASIX

The Post Position Draw has created some interesting and unusual scenario's.

Curlin is buried down on the rail, and if he does not get out early and make position, the field will squeeze him like an accordian. The absolute worst draw of the field went to Curlin.

Teufelsberg and Nobizlikeshowbiz have great positions for thier strong early speed. Expect Stewart Elliot to send him and get great position into the first turn.

From Post #13 Bwana Bull to Post #18 Any Given Saturday, all of these horses will be looking for a comfortable tuck and middle-far middle to get position for their big late runs.

Street Sense got the Golden Draw, Post #7. Trainer Carl Nafzeger must be excstatic ! Street Sense and Calvin Borel can go anywhere they want early for position. If the pace is hot, they can tuck in around 5th to 8th spot, if the pace is slow they can sit pretty in 4th or 5th. Street Sense should have excellent position going into the backstretch.

Great Hunter is in a very tough spot. Being all the way on the outside in post #20, it will be extremely difficult for Corey Nakatani to get any forward position without using a lot of horse early. Great Hunter's greatest problem will be finding a place to get comfortable in when they hot the turns. Expect this one to have a lot of energy and run, but I question if he can be used early for position, then make his close, and still have enough to be in the money in this stellar field. P>Scat Daddy should also be able to find great position from post #14. We think Edgar Prado may have to use some horse to get position, and then hope for racing luck to find holes and gaps to shoot Scat Daddy through.

Circular Quay and Johnny V have the neccessary tactical speed for position.

Tiago is a one run closer, so he should drop back early.

This years running of the Kentucky Derby should be very exciting and a lot of fun for all of us !

There are Multiple Stakes Races on the card including, The $300,000 Humana Distaff, and the $500,000 Woodford Reserve.
